Scope and Content 

 

This fonds consists of photographs taken by Robert A. Cartter while he was a member of the U.S. Army 18th Corps of Engineers. They document the construction of the Alaska Highway between White River and Whitehorse, Yukon.

The photographs depict the Alaska Highway, construction scenes, army crews, vehicles and equipment preparing the roadbed and building bridges, and scenic views. There are a number of images of timber and pontoon bridges crossing Edith Creek, the Donjek, Slims and White Rivers, as well as photographs of army tent maintenance camps at Whitehorse, Kluane, etc. The ferry at Takhini River Crossing is also shown. There are images of the Yukon communities of Burwash, Champagne, and Whitehorse and a number of scenic views and panoramas taken in the Slims River, Kluane, Edith Creek and Donjek River Valley area.
