Scope and Content

This fonds consists of photographs and textual records created by and documenting Anton Vogee's life and work as a sign painter and photographer in Portland, Dyea, Skagway, Atlin, Pine City, and Dawson City.

The photographs, taken by Anton Vogee from ca. 1896 to ca. 1906, capture his participation in the Klondike Gold Rush through related areas in Oregon, Alaska, British Columbia, and the Yukon. The images include businesses and street scenes in the communities he resided, scenes of the Dyea Trail and Chilkoot Pass including an avalanche in 1898, the White Pass, views of Bennett and Whitehorse, miners and mining activity (particularly in the Atlin Mining District including Pine Creek and Spruce Creek), methods of transportation including steamships and pack trains, White Pass & Yukon Route (WP&YR) infrastructure and sternwheelers, leisure activities, scenic views, portraits, and exterior views of Vogee's shops and galleries in Portland, Dyea, Atlin, Pine City, and Dawson City. Many of the signs featured in photographs were likely painted by Vogee. Vogee, his wife Inga, and son Arthur appear in some of the photographs. Also included are four box lids for photographic glass plate packages (#323-#326) (82/271).

The fonds also contains photocopies of newspaper clippings, correspondence, display captions and three photographs relating to the 1973 Yukon House exhibit in Vancouver featuring Anton Vogee's photographs and memorabilia, photocopies of his citizenship papers, his son Arthur's birth certificate, stock certificates, personal correspondence, and a biographical sketch with revision notes made by Arthur Vogee in 1982 (82/523).
