Biographical Sketch or Administrative History 

 

John Ostashek was leader of the Yukon Party from 1992 to 2000 and Yukon Government Leader from 1992 to 1996. Recognizing the need and the importance of the Umbrella Final Agreement (UFA) and land claims for the First Nations and the people of the Yukon he signed off on the UFA and the first four land claims in the territory on behalf of the Government of Yukon.

Born in High Prairie, Alberta in 1937, John Ostashek built a successful outfitting business in the province before moving north. In the 1970s he purchased and ran a big-game outfitting business in the Kluane, Yukon area. He was also a horse rancher, pilot, and fisherman and developed a small farm along Kluane Lake.

John Ostashek was married to Carol Pettigrew and they had four children. He died on June 11, 2007.
