Initially called Infrastructure, the Yukon government's Department of Highways and Public Works was created on April 1, 2002 under the re-organization that resulted from the Liberal government's Renewal initiative. The functions of this department were previously the responsibility of the Dept. of Community and Transportation Services and the Dept. of Government Services. Responsibility for ATIPP (Access to Information and Protection of Privacy) was transferred from the Dept. of Education. The department's name was changed from Infrastructure to Highways and Public Works when the Yukon Party came into power in 2002.
As of 2021, the department consisted of the following divisions and branches: Corporate Services Section, Information and Communications Technology Division, Transportation Division (including Transportation Engineering, Transport Services, Transportation Planning, Transportation Maintenance, and Aviation), Procurement and Support Centre, and Property Management Division.
The department is responsible to a Minister of the Territorial Government.
