The Yukon government's Department of Environment is responsible for legislation, regulations, licensing, management, policies, programs, services, education and information regarding the natural environment in the following areas: fish and wildlife, environmental protection and assessment, parks and protected areas, and climate change.

Administrative History 

 

The Yukon government's Department of Environment was created under the Liberal government's Renewal initiative in 2002 and assumed the former Department of Renewable Resources' responsibilities related to environmental conservation and protection. Renewable Resources' remaining responsibilities (Agriculture, Forestry and Land Use Planning) became the responsibility of the new Department of Energy, Mines and Resources.

As of 2017, the department consisted of three divisions: the Deputy Minister's Office, Corporate Services and Climate Change, and Environmental Sustainability. The Animal Health Unit reports directly to the Deputy Minister. The Corporate Services and Climate Change division includes the following branches: Assistant Deputy Minister's Office, Communications, Climate Change Secretariat, Finance and Client Services, Human Resources, Information Management and Technology, and Policy, Planning and Aboriginal Relations. The Environmental Sustainability division includes the following branches: Assistant Deputy Minister's Office, Conservation Officer Services, Environmental Programs, Fish and Wildlife, Water Resources, and Yukon Parks.

The department reports to a Minister of the Territorial Government.
