Scope and Content 

 

The fonds consists of textual records and photographs from the family of Dr. A.J. Gillis.

Included are dentist's diplomas, certificates and licenses; mining and marriage certificates; the diary Gillis kept when first travelling to the Klondike in the Yukon, in 1898; personal incoming correspondence, 1912-1935 from Robert Service, Martha Black, and Mrs. Gillis; financial records; notes of congratulations for the birth of their daughter; and a folder of newspaper clippings that mention the Gillis's or Robert Service.

The photographs include Bennett, an avalanche at Chilkoot Pass, the Gillis house in Dawson City, Dawson City street scenes, family gatherings, Robert Service at his cabin, mining activity on the Bonanza and Dominion creeks, and a Robert Service cairn. The photograph album contains various Klondike related scenes (98/78).

Immediate Source of Acquisition 

 

Mrs. Alexandria (Alix) Jane Wennekens donated accession 82/40 to Yukon Archives in February 1974. The photographs in accession 80/148 were given to Mrs. Wennekens by Mrs. Marie Dewey DeWitt, the daughter of Mrs. Sherman (Peggy) Dewey, a former resident of Dawson City. Mrs. Wennekens donated these in December 1976.

Custodial History 

 

Accession 98/78 was donated by Florence Johnson in 1998.
