Scope and Content |
|
The fonds consists of material created and collected by Martha Black.
Glass lantern slides (308) with scenes of the Yukon were used by Martha Black in slideshows she presented to the public, often when travelling outside the Yukon. The slides are described in the Photograph Collection series (82/294). A photograph album contains family photographs and Dawson City scenes. There are also 19 loose photographs of the Blacks and their friends (82/218).
Also included is Martha Black's typescript of her book "My Seventy Years", correspondence, her House of Commons diary, speech notes, postcards and calling cards (82/218).
The audio reel consists of Florence Whyard interviewing Martha Black in 1956 for CBC's Trans-Canada Matinee (82/218).
There is also an original drawing, and two colour "Artistic Botanical Studies of Real Pressed Flowers" drawn by Martha Black and printed in postcard format (80/158).
The microfilm is of a scrapbook she created of the Blacks' overseas experiences during World War I (82/234).

Custodial History |
|
The Whitehorse Chapter of the Imperial Order of Daughters of the Empire (IODE) were custodians of the glass lantern slides. They donated the slides to the Yukon Archives in 1982 (82/294). Florence Whyard donated the textual material, the photograph album, her sound recordings with Martha Black, and the accompanying booklets in 1977 (82/218). Janet Ireland donated postcards and the original drawing by Martha Black in 1980 (80/158). The microfilm copy of the original scrapbook was received from Public Archives of Canada in 1986 (82/234).

Restrictions on Access |
|
If the taped interview is quoted, credit should be given to Florence Whyard and the CBC. There are no donor-imposed restrictions on the remaining material. General copyright or institutional or legal restrictions may apply.
|
Notes |
|
The original scrapbook was donated to the Yukon Archives in 1982 and returned to MacBride Museum in 2008 (82/234). In 1986 the scrapbook was sent to the Public Archives of Canada to be microfilmed as the original was very fragile and it had national significance.
Published booklets written by Martha Black titled "Klondike Days", "Two Royal Elizabeths", and "The Birth of the Empire" were transferred to the Yukon Archives Library.
The postcards are stored with the textual records.
