Scope and Content 

 

The fonds consists of 1148 glass plate negatives created or collected by Whitehorse photographer E.J. Hamacher. The negatives were taken ca. 1898-1935. They include panoramic views and images of Yukon communities and Skagway, Alaska; transportation (sternwheelers, automobiles, dogsleds, etc.); domestic animals and wildlife; studio and casual shots of First Nations people, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) clergy, women, families, etc.; mining on Bullion Creek and Livingstone Creek; totem poles; a picnic at Miles Canyon sponsored by Kodak for the Whitehorse Photography Club; scenic views; social events; and miscellaneous subjects.

Custodial History 

 

Rolf Hougen came into possession of the photographs in 1949. He donated them to the Yukon Archives in 2002.

Restrictions on Access 

 

Photographs must be cited as follows: Yukon Archives. E.J. Hamacher fonds (Margaret and Rolf Hougen collection), 2002/118 #__. Researchers will not have access to the fragile glass plate negatives if a reference print exists or the negative is broken. Researchers may view individual negatives under the supervision of the RDA on duty.

Notes 

 

The fonds contains 1148 glass plate negatives although 1162 are listed in the caption list. Fourteen images were missing when the fonds was donated to the Yukon Archives. The 14 are indicated in the caption list by "No photo".

Arrangement 

 

The first 500 negatives were organized into 10 subject series by the donor.

Condition 

 

The glass plate negatives are fragile and should not be handled if at all possible.

Availability of Other Formats 

 

Reference prints were produced for over half of the images.

Caption list is available. Photocopies of all printed images are available for viewing in the reference room.
