Scope and Content 

 

This fonds consists of corporate records of the White Pass and Yukon Route (WP&YR) and is composed of 16 administrative and functional series, most of which are further divided into component sub-series. River, Rail, and Petroleum Division records are indicative of series that reflect the administrative organization of the company, whereas Financial, Freight, and Land records are examples of functional series.

The fonds consists of the following series: President, Executive Vice-President and General Managers records, 1898-1902, 1939-1964; River Division records, 1898-1960; Side Streams Navigation Company records, 1913, 1916-1917; Financial records, 1897-1972, 1974-1975; Freight records, 1936-1938, 1948-1949, 1954-1955, 1957, 1960, 1963-1964; Land records, 1898-1952; Accident and insurance records, 1946-1954; Meteorological records, 1902-1957; Petroleum Division records, 1954-1957; Rail Division records, 1899-1960; Snag Airport and Radio Range Station construction records, 1942-1944; Miscellaneous records, 1906-1961; Air Service Division records, 1935-1945; Visual Records; Directors and shareholders records, 1898-1967; and Advertising, publicity & publication records.

Physical Description Notes 

 

Includes approx. 200 reels of film footage, 37 photographs, approx. 15 maps, 5 videocassettes, and 3 original drawings. Accession 80/160 contains 2 b&w prints. Accession 81/113 consists of 20 b&w prints. Accession 82/452 contains 7 b&w prints and 2 col. prints. Accession 85/60 consists of 6 b&w copy negs.

Some of the records from accessions 82/451 and 82/452 have been microfilmed.

The photographs in accession 82/452 were digitized as Production Masters for access in 2017.

Reference prints are available for the photographs in accession 85/60.

Yukon Archives has received additional material (accessions 94/58, 98/135, and 2022/11) for this fonds that has yet to be included in this description. The material in 94/58 includes about 14.5 metres of corporate records (including correspondence and financial records), charts, maps, posters, sound recordings, films, and about 20,000 photographs. The material in 98/135 consists of about 26 metres of corporate records (including files about land ownership, leasing and sales), and approximately 100 maps. File lists are available for these two accessions. Yukon Archives expects to receive additional White Pass and Yukon Route records worthy of preservation once they are no longer required by the company.
