Scope and Content 

 

The fonds consists of records created or acquired by Rolf Hougen of Whitehorse, Yukon, that relate to himself, his wife Margaret and their family, and his business ventures and community involvement.

The fonds is organized into the following three series: Photographs, Sound recordings, and Textual records.

Administrative History or Biographical Sketch 

 

Rolf Hougen (b. 1928) is a Whitehorse, Yukon businessman and entrepreneur. He moved to the community with his parents in 1944 and following graduation from high school began managing a store they had established. Hougen's Ltd. prospered over the years and became a large department store on Main Street. His other business ventures have included car dealerships, real estate, a radio station, a cable TV station, and a communications system which delivers television to northern and remote communities via satellite. Rolf Hougen's work on many boards and as a volunteer has been recognized with numerous awards. An avid photographer and amateur filmmaker, Rolf Hougen has captured people, special events and communities in the north thus creating a documentary heritage of the Yukon. He and his wife Margaret are also strong supporters of the Yukon arts community. Rolf and Margaret Hougen have six children and 18 grandchildren. Click on the link(s) below for more information.

Immediate Source of Acquisition 

 

Accession 82/346 was donated by Rolf Hougen in 1974 and 1975. The remaining accessions were donated to the Yukon Archives by Rolf Hougen in 1986, 2009, 2010 and 2012.
